Brisbane Roars managed to lift successive titles until the management of Ange Postecoglou, who is currently in charge of Melbourne Victory. Postecoglou will be returning to Brisbane for the second time this season, but he sees his former team in a bad shape at the moment. The club are currently seventh in the Australian league table, which has only 10 teams. Melbourne Victory, meanwhile, do have the opportunity to get into the top two positions of the table. The club are third in the table, but only a few points separates them from the second placed Central Coast United.

Postecoglou has said that it is not surprising to see his former team struggled because the teams that easily win the league struggle in the subsequent seasons. He has said that the achievements of Brisbane over the last three years has been nothing short of outstanding and extraordinary. This in turn requires a lot of energy and emotion out of the team. In a way, Brisbane are paying for the success that they achieved under his regime. Melbourne come into the match against Brisbane after having finally broken the three match consecutive defeat with a 5-0 win over Newcastle Jets. Postecoglou has said that he is not sure about the reception that he will get from his former fans.

“If you look at the history of the A-League, teams that win the competition usually struggle the year after. What we did last year was pretty extraordinary to be able to back up. A lot of teams that won the title even found it hard to make finals the year after. That takes out a lot of energy, a lot of emotion and it maybe caught up with them this year. It certainly didn’t help amid some uncertainty and the club being unsettled,” said Postecoglou.
