MARQUEE SIGNING

Melbourne Victory will be looking to sign a marquee name in the next few weeks of the transfer window after managing to get Archie Thompson under the salary cap after agreeing a new deal with him. The 35-year-old has signed for one more year, while the 28-year-old Adrian Leijer has signed for two more years.

Newcastle Jets have been showing a lot of interest in Thompson over the last few months. The forward is the leading goal scorer in the Australian A-League with 78 to his name. His experience would have been great for the club that finished outside the play-off places last season.

In order to fill up the vacated space in the marquee signing area, it is understood that Melbourne Victory will be bringing in Albanian striker Besart Berisha from Brisbane Roar. Berisha is expected to sign a two-year contract at the club and will be a marquee signing. It has been heavily speculated, on sites such as brasille messico probabilitá, that the potential arrival of Berisha will threaten the starting spot for Thompson.

This would have persuaded him to leave Melbourne Victory in search of regular first-team football, but it now seems that the 35-year-old has decided to extend his spell at the club.

Thompson has stated that the arrival of Berisha will only help him do even better.

“You just want to attract the best players to the club that you can and I want to win a championship before my career is out. The last two seasons we’ve fallen at that last hurdle, but I think with the likes of Berisha coming as well as whoever else Musky (coach Kevin Muscat) brings in I hope they help because I want to win another Championship,” said Thompson. Melbourne Victory have also been linked with a move for Juventus forward James Troisi in the last few days.
