You may think there would be little to interest Australian soccer fans as Europe’s major tournament plays out in France but this is a massive competition with some great football on show. Added to that general interest are two players in particular who will attract more attention than many as the European Championship develops.
Janko fires a blank
Supporters of Sydney FC will surely be interested to see how their former striker Marc Janko fares as Austria look to make inroads into Group H but it was a poor start for the 32 year old and the country as a whole. The Austrians have only qualified for one major tournament since the World Cup of 1998 and although they were not expected to go deep into Euro 2016, they should have taken at least a point over rivals Hungary. Leicester centre forward Jamie Vardy is set to miss the friendly against the Australia men national team side as they take on The Three Lions in a friendly match. The striker will miss England’s friendly with Australia on Friday, England’s national team smanager Roy Hodgson has confirmed. The England international, who scored the winner against Turkey, is getting married on Wednesday.
Vardy is set to tie the knot with Rebekah Nicholson, who already uses Jamie’s surname, and the couple will spend a couple of days together before Vardy hooks up with his England team-mates once more. The Leicester striker has enjoyed an incredible season in both the Premier League and for his country and he will be on the plane to France for Euro 2016.
Vardy’s strike rate is one of the reasons that England remain one of the favourites for the tournament, with StanJames, the sports betting website listing their chances above the likes of Italy and Spain, behind just France and Germany to win the whole tournament.
Hodgson said “Jamie will now celebrate his wedding on Wednesday, so we won’t see him for a few days. But we will have more competition when [Wayne Rooney, Marcus Rashford and Daniel Sturridge turn up on Monday.
“Vardy won’t be involved on Friday because he is getting married on Wednesday. His wedding was planned for last June, I called him up for friendlies and he cancelled it, so he is within his rights to get married on Wednesday. The public might be surprised, but the major reason for it is because he had to cancel the wedding last year.
“It was more difficult for me to see it as an issue than maybe it would have been to complain about this date. Under normal circumstances, Wednesday would be when we would join up and, when he planned the wedding, he probably expected ten days off first before coming back for international duty.
“But we know Jamie, we are satisfied with him and I don’t think his place is under serious threat, so it hasn’t caused me too many problems,” he added.
Archie Thompson was teary eyed as fans of Melbourne Victory wished him a very emotional send-off during ACL match. No more will the fans serenade the legendary forward after he played his last home games in 11 seasons for the club on Tuesday in the Asian Champions League game. The player was substituted in the 67th minute. The star player pulled his head into his shirt first then began the long walk to the substitute’s bench as fans pay tribute.
Arsenal are guaranteed that they will be finishing in at least the 4th spot of the Premier League in this season and this is enough for them to snatch a Champions League qualification spot for their upcoming campaign.
Arsene Wenger is a continuous target of criticism as the Frenchman fails to push Arsenal to the Premier League title and it has not been any different this time around as it was Leicester City which came out on top and won the English league but Arsenal has consistently been able to compete in the Champions League and the Premier League club will be competing once again for the 19th successive season.
The French coach of Arsenal has revealed minor details in relation to the approaching summer transfer window as he is already preparing his team for the next season and a few signings are expected to take place as he said: ‘’We have to add something defensively as a team to be more ruthless. I don’t think we are soft but yes, we need to toughen up. In some games we were caught, but a lot of the teams have the same problem.” Continue reading →
While Adelaide United grabbed all the headlines in the A-League after winning only their second Grand Final in the club’s history following their 3-1 victory against Western Sydney Wanderers, Leicester City were enjoying their own fairytale story in the English Premier League.
A team that narrowly escaped relegation last season have surpassed all expectations by lifting the title, and while many waited for Leicester City to slip up, it failed to materialised as they finished ten points clears of Arsenal at the summit. Continue reading →
The season of Melbourne Victory in the A-League is over after having suffered a loss against Brisbane Road when they faced off at Suncorp Stadium on April 15th.
It actually was Melbourne Victory the team that took the lead through Besart Berisha as he scored the opening goal of the game at the 86th minute but Brisbane Roar responded quickly after as Matt McKay tied the game up 1-1 and Thomas Broich sealed the victory for Roar.
Brisbane Roar will have to face off with Western Sydney on April 24 and the winner from that match is going to reach the grand finals of the A-League while Melbourne Victory’s season is finished.
It didn’t take long for the head coach of Melbourne Victory to voice his disappointment as Kevin Muscat said: “I don’t think we deserved that tonight. We were very good. We were the better team but it can be a cruel game sometimes and it’s certainly one of those nights tonight. For the season to finish like it has for us tonight, I’m gutted. I’m shattered for the group. I don’t think I need to convince you that we didn’t deserve that tonight. We were very good,” Continue reading →
Ryan Giggs, the Manchester United assistant manager, has issued a warning to Jose Mourinho about the importance of the youth academy in Manchester United. Indeed, Mourinho has always been perceived as a manager that is more interested in signing accomplished players rather than developing them.
Manchester United, who is renowned for the success of their youth policy, will want their culture to remain whoever becomes the next manager. With reports that Jose Mourinho has agreed to a verbal agreement to be the next Manchester United manager, Ryan Giggs will want to ensure that the new manager will respect the United tradition.
Despite the current season that has not been up to the expectations, Louis van Gaal has given the opportunity to players such as Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Marcus Rashford, who have performed extremely well. Rashford has gained praise for his performance in the Champions League game where he scored two goals against Midtjylland.
Ryan Giggs believe that it is part of the Manchester United culture to ensure that there are not only world-class players from abroad on the pitch but also good academy players. According to Giggs, this is what separate Manchester United from the other clubs and any manager will have to abide by this philosophy. Continue reading →

This victory is crucial for Melbourne Victory as the Australian club wants to secure a finals spot and as long as Kevin Muscat is able to keep his team in the top 6 spots of the league, then this mission can certainly be achieved. Continue reading →
Lokomotiv Moscow, the Russian football team, is heading for some difficulty from Europe’s football governing body after one of their footballers players pulled off his jersey t-shirt to show a portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin along with a slogan endorsing him.

Lokomotiv Moscow is almost certain to confront some disciplinary action from the UEFA as political statements are not allowed at their matches.

Brisbane Roar recently suffered a thrashing at the hands of Melbourne Victory, but manager Kevin Muscat refused to get carried away because of this impressive win.
Melbourne managed a 4-0 win against the table leaders. The team was coming on the back of a three match unbeaten run, but they were not expected to get such a convincing win against one of the inform teams in the division. After all, Melbourne Victory had just conceded three goals in the win over Central Coast United. Muscat appears to have downplayed the victory since he sees a lot of work ahead of the team.
The team are still on the fringes of going out of a play-off place if results take a sharp turn for the worst. The win over Brisbane Roar has helped Melbourne Victory strengthen their position over Adelaide United and Wellington Phoenix. Both teams are already several points behind Melbourne in the table. Muscat will be hoping to build on this means when his team have yet another home game against one of the teams near the top of the table. Sydney are third in the table and are only three points ahead of Melbourne Victory. This should be a great motivation for the home team to get three points and move up the table. Continue reading →
Tim Cahill, the veteran Aussie midfielder, has criticized the Football Federation Australia for the game’s lack of grassroots charm, the current state of the A-League and how it dealt with marquee players such as ex Juventus star Alessandro Del Piero.
Cahill, 36, was was earlier released by the Chinese football club Shanghai Shenhua earlier this week. He thought of coming back to A-League, but its lack of vision could hurt his career. Continue reading →
Kevin Muscat is the head manager of Melbourne Victory and his main task of this season is to protect the A-League Championship title which he lifted in the previous season but this mission is starting to slip away from his hands after sustaining his 3rd successive defeat when Perth Glory emerged as the victorious team when both sides met on December 16 at the nib Stadium in Perth.
Melbourne Victory were the favorites of claiming the victory in this match but Kevin Muscat and his players failed to win the game as the final scoreboard of the game was 1-0 in favor of the home team with the only goal of the entire match arriving from Diego Castro at the 74th minute.
Danny Vukovic had made a splendid performance in this game as the goal-keeper of Melbourne Victory was working hard keeping the scoreboard goal-less but there was little that he could do to deny Castro from scoring. Perth Glory had a few other chances of increasing their lead as they were the team that was clearly performing better.
The team of Kevin Muscat is definitely not playing in the same level that they displayed at the earlier stages of the season and this is something that will have to change and fast in order for Melbourne Victory to keep themselves in the top spots of the A-League and to still have a shot of defending their league title which is still possible as the season has a long way to go but the defeats have to stop arriving. Melbourne Victory have made a poor start to the league campaign after taking only four points from the opening three games, but this run does not concern manager Kevin Muscat.
The manager remains confident that the players are good enough to start picking results sooner rather than later. The team recently suffered a 1-0 narrow defeat against Newcastle Jets. This does not bode well for the upcoming game against Wellington Phoenix in front of their own supporters. The A-League is only a couple of matches old for the 2015/16 season, but the team are already finding themselves in the middle of the table.
Table leaders Sydney have been able to open a six-point advantage already after having dropped only two points so far. This will be a sizeable advantage even at this early stage. Apart from having to contend with the threat from Sydney, Melbourne Victory also need to overcome the likes of Brisbane Roar and Newcastle Jets if they are to become successful this season. After having performed exceptionally well and won the title last season, it is turning out into a potential mediocre campaign for Victory. Muscat says that the way his team are playing gives him no reason for concern. Continue reading →
Melbourne Victory are keen to extend their trophy Cabinet according to manager Kevin Muscat who says that the team will not be resting on their laurels for the upcoming match against Adelaide United.
This FFA cup quarter-final match will see the two teams going head-to-head in a bid to compete in the semifinals. Melbourne Victory are amongst the eight teams still left in the competition and they are seen as one of the favourites to win the title. The desire to win the title is much greater after having suffered an exit at a similar stage last season.
The round of 16 provided a huge scare for Melbourne Victory after they could only manage a narrow 3-2 victory over Rockdale City Suns. During the previous rounds, though, they have been fairly comfortable and this was demonstrated by the 6-0 thrashing of Balmain Tigers in the round of 32. Dylan Murnane has been one of the star players during pre-season and he is likely to get the nod against Adelaide United. This will be a major opportunity for him to impress and make himself a permanent fixture in the Melbourne Victory team. Despite already having played several matches in this year’s competition, the game against Adelaide will be the first on home soil for Melbourne. Continue reading →
Last season, Melbourne Victory were crowned A-League champions after a gruelling campaign. Tunisia international Fahid Ben Khalfallah played a key role in their success after joining the club last September. Ben Khalfallah played 27 matches for Melbourne in the 2014-15 campaign, scoring five goals and racking up numerous assists.
Although his performances were impressive, he may improve further now that he has fully adapted to the pace and style of Australia’s primary soccer competition. One of the most important aspects of a footballer’s development is his happiness – both on and off the field. It is crucial that a player is happy if he is to perform at his optimum level.
